Sometimes I ask myself how much we would be able to accomplish as individuals, as a Community, as a Country if we all adopted the spirit of “cooperation, ” “togetherness;”putting our resources together in order to see the growth and development of our Nation. We all want to achieve success in our daily life; prosperity, good life, more money, being able to pursue your dreams and actually achieve them. Have you ever pictured something like that in your mind.Just take a moment, think about it. An Utopian society, right? A society where people live together in a perfect way to form a perfect society. It seems like a dream and unrealistic, but only because you and I sometimes think so.Its all possible if a spirit of cooperation is adopted.Cooperation means people work together towards achieving a common goal.Just think about it,almost each and every one wakes up early in the morning to go to work, so that at the end of the day, you get money to acquire the basic needs of life, and of course acquire all the other luxuries you day dream about, and dream about when you put your head down to sleep. When you look at most of the big institutions in the Country that make a pretty big positive impact in society; from Religious Institutions, Rotary Clubs, to Cooperative Societies among many others, they all teach you one thing. The power that lies in joint contribution.Take for example, most religious institutions, they have what they call alms giving, where the members of the congregation each give what they can afford. However little it may be,when put together, it makes a large sum of money which is used to accomplish big projects like construction of buildings and feeding hundreds and thousands of people..among many others. My point is that I believe if associations were formed in our neighborhoods, communities just like cooperative societies, where people would contribute towards a given cause like constructing a borehole or building latrines for a school, planting trees in your neighborhood to combat negative effects of climate change, putting up lights on the road to light up the neighborhood, or even educating a child who lacks school fees,a lot would be accomplished within the shortest time period. This reminds me of Rwanda’s Umuganda day.Its their national cleaning day.You can read more about it.It doesn’t have to be money as a resource; it can be people as a resource.Citizen participation is the word.Today, I was supposed to post something different, but chose to post this after I saw a young boy in the newspapers who needed help of about 1 million for surgery to get him out of a terrible disease that had hindered him from living a normal life just like his age mates. When you read his story..it is one of great strength, hope and perseverance. If you can contribute in anyway, the numbers are on the picture.
